Picnic Grove Heyday

Eman Opatrny bought his father Frank’s property in 1899 and turned it into a picnic area. Picnic plots (including sheltered areas), a shooting gallery, a horse track, six bars, a boathouse, boat docks, a dancing platform, a restaurant, a photo gallery, rowboat rentals, a bowling alley, a railroad spur track, a steam-powered excursion boat, and baseball diamonds were all part of the Fox River Picnic Grove.

Trainloads of pleasure-seekers from Chicagoland would pour into the park for weekend getaways. Many cottages were built near the river’s side by Opatrny.

During a fire in 1918, the Picnic Grove was severely damaged, and most of the attractions from the early 1900s were destroyed.

The Picnic Grove was purchased by Louis Jr. and Clara Cernocky in 1942. A new dance pavilion, an air-conditioned cocktail lounge, and a 300-foot sandy beach were added by the couple. In the 1960s, it became disorganized. The Grove Marina, which first opened its doors in 1961 and featured a restaurant and a cocktail club with live entertainment, was destroyed by a fire in the mid-1970s.

Castle Vianden

Theodore “Teddy” Bettendorf began construction on what is now known as Castle Vianden in 1931, along what is now US Route 14. Teddy spent 36 years creating his castle in the Luxembourgian style after emigrating from Vianden, Luxembourg.

The castle included eight towers, a guard room, a bugle tower, a castle yard, an enclosed sun porch, a modern kitchen, garage, dungeon, and a wishing well by 1960 when it was available to visitors. Until his death in 1967, Bettendorff continued to expand to his castle. The castle was rented out as a honeymoon resort in the 1970s. The castle is still a private residence, although its owners have been working to reopen it to the public in recent years.

Other Recreational Areas

In Fox River Grove, there are over 100 acres of public parks and open space. Residents and visitors can use the village’s 11 parks, which include playgrounds, basketball and volleyball courts, Port-A-Johns, sledding hills, baggo (cornhole) sets, soccer and baseball fields, picnic places, fishing sites, hiking areas, and an ice skating rink.

Due to the village’s tiny population, it cannot maintain an official park district thus recreational events are organized and controlled by the Fox River Grove Rec Council, which is run entirely by volunteers.

A men’s basketball league, an adult volleyball league, and a children’s soccer program are among the Council’s sporting offerings. Cary-Grove groups manage youth baseball, softball, and basketball leagues.

Testimonials From Our Satisfied Customers

Amy Duhig Founder & CEO of XpeedStudio

We started off not knowing what we wanted, but knew we needed a new kitchen and flooring for most of our first floor, which was overwhelming to us. We worked with Liz to help us design what we wanted. She was fabulous and patient with us. Timelines were met and the crew who worked with us ended up feeling like part of the family. When faced with some pretty big “snags,” which were of no fault of Waldron Construction, Joe was professional, pushed to make things right, and kept his word; The team went above and beyond and did excellent work.

Nancy Leah Founder & CEO of XpeedStudio

Such a great team of professionals. We had our kitchen remodeled and Waldron Construction was very helpful and thorough. A little future advice for anyone considering a major remodel is to expect delays and the need to make changes due to supply availability or unforeseen issues. Joe Waldron treats you with great respect and is very driven to make sure you are very satisfied and happy with your remodel. Some may feel the expense is too high…but you do get what you pay for. Thank you for a very beautiful kitchen, Nancy and Gary

Joan Peart Founder & CEO of XpeedStudio

We just completed our dream kitchen remodel with Waldron Construction. We are extremely pleased with the results. Angie helped us through the design and was always a text/phone call away. The trades were excellent and were great to work with. Of course there were hiccups in the process but nothing that couldn’t be worked out. Having the schedule in front of us daily through builder trend was great too. Joe was very responsive whenever we had questions or concerns. We would recommend Waldron for your next home improvement project..
