Racine Art Museum
The Racine Art Museum (RAM) is a museum of fine art located in Racine, Wisconsin. It features a permanent collection of more than 10,000 works of art, including paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, and textiles. RAM also hosts temporary exhibitions of art from around the world.
The museum was founded in 1938 by a group of local artists and art enthusiasts. It originally operated out of the home of one of its founders, but it soon moved to other locations before finally settling in its current location in 1966. RAM underwent a major renovation in 2003, which doubled the size of the museum and added new exhibit spaces, studios, and classrooms.

RAM’s permanent collection features works by some of the most famous artists in history, including Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, and Georgia O’Keeffe. The museum also hosts regular exhibitions of art from around the world, which have included everything from ancient Egyptian artifacts to contemporary American paintings.
A contribution of 294 Works Progress Administration (WPA) artworks, including textiles from the Milwaukee Handicraft Project and paintings, photographs, and block prints by Wisconsin and New York-based artists, kicked off the museum’s permanent collection.
Before joining the museum, Jerry worked as a supervisor for the WPA Art Program and negotiated a 99-year lease for the collection, including works by lithographer Mabel Dwight, painter Rufino Tamayo, and photographers Brett Weston and Bernice Abbott. The works of the WPA are still on display in sporadic exhibitions, the most recent of which was in 2017.
The museum moved into a historic building donated by the M&I Bank of Racine in downtown Racine in 2000. Brininstool & Lynch of Chicago designed the 1874 bank building, which included the installation of a translucent acrylic shell around the upper two stories of the old limestone structure.
The acrylic panels were 18 inches off the building’s surface, allowing the limestone’s colors to shine through during the day and be illuminated at night. The new structure expanded the museum’s capacity from 15,500 to 40,000 square feet (1,440 to 3,720 m2) and added a sculpture garden, an art library, and big display windows.

We just completed our dream kitchen remodel with Waldron Construction. We are extremely pleased with the results. Angie helped us through the design and was always a text/phone call away. The trades were excellent and were great to work with. Of course there were hiccups in the process but nothing that couldn’t be worked out. Having the schedule in front of us daily through builder trend was great too. Joe was very responsive whenever we had questions or concerns.
