The long-abandoned Vulcan Lakes quarry was reclaimed by the City of Crystal Lake and transformed into an incredible recreation experience. Take advantage of the clean waters, natural habitat, and fantastic fishing. Rowboats, canoes, kayaks, sailboats, and paddleboats are available for rent.
Plan a picnic while admiring the stunning views of the sea and the lake islands. Make memories at the kid-friendly spray park, and dine al fresco on our lakeside patio. In our Scuba Zone, you can try recreational scuba diving or get certified at one of the local scuba schools.

History of Three Oaks
Vulcan Materials began extracting sand and stone from what is now known as the Three Oaks Recreation Area in the early 1950s. The water table was uncovered after four decades of mining, resulting in the formation of two lakes.
The land became the property of the City of Crystal Lake after Vulcan Materials finished mining in the late 1990s. After that, the city began years of planning to build a passive recreation space. Three Oaks Recreation Area, named after the road that once ran through the property, opened to the public in the fall of 2010.
Entrance and Parking
Residents of Crystal Lake who have a valid City vehicle sticker on their windshield are entitled to free parking at Three Oaks Recreation Area. All vehicles entering the park without a valid City vehicle sticker will be fined $5.00 each.
Vehicles can arrive from either the west or north. Enter the park from the west via the Main Street entrance, which is near Mayfair Furniture and Carpet. Come in at the Highway Route 14 entry, which is between Harris Bank and Cooper Tire, to enter the park from the north. The East, West, and North entrance points all have pedestrian walkways.
Personal Watercraft
Personal kayaks, canoes, and rowboats are not permitted on the Three Oaks Recreation Area lakes. This is to keep invasive species out of the water by preventing them from entering by outside watercraft. On the water, only vessels from the boat rental marina are permitted.
Three Oaks is a must-visit if you are in McHenry or if you are planning to visit McHenry. There is a lot more to it than what is described here, and you can only witness it once you visit it.

We just completed our dream kitchen remodel with Waldron Construction. We are extremely pleased with the results. Angie helped us through the design and was always a text/phone call away. The trades were excellent and were great to work with. Of course there were hiccups in the process but nothing that couldn’t be worked out. Having the schedule in front of us daily through builder trend was great too. Joe was very responsive whenever we had questions or concerns.
